INTERIM COVID-19 ADOPTION PROCESS

During the COVID-19 stay-at-home order, we have been inundated with applications, which is a good problem to have! So, we have developed special guidelines to help us efficiently respond to 200+ daily email inquiries. Pay attention closely to these instructions because applications will not be processed if they are not followed.

  1. Fill out the application (DOG  or  CAT) completely. Every question must be answered, and it must be signed. If you are going to type your responses, open the application, save it, type your answers, and save it again. Applications must be returned in the .pdf format. Applicants must be 21+ years old and live within a 50-mile radius of our shelter at 22415 Groesbeck Hwy, Warren 48089.
  2. You must identify at least 1 dog/cat that you are interested in. If there are multiple dogs/cats, number them in order of priority. Our online animal bios are designed to provide as much information as possible and answer some anticipated questions. We do not have the resources to respond to emails with more specific questions.
  3. Print, sign and scan the application. Electronic signatures will be accepted. Blanks on the signature line and date will not.
  4. Scan a copy of proof of home ownership (i.e. tax bill, deed, or mortgage payment – you can black out the account # etc.) or animal clause/agreement of your rental agreement.
  5. Attach the application and home ownership proof/rental agreement animal clause to a new email and send it to bark@iheartdogs.org. The subject line must be formatted to read “#1 choice of dog/cat, Your First and Last Name”. Example:   Subject: Fido, Jane Doe
  6. Once your application is received, it will be assigned to an Adoption Counselor who will follow-up with the applicant who is the best fit within a few days, or to discuss other dogs on your list. It could take up to a couple of weeks for you to receive a final disposition on your application so there is no need to check on the status.

While this process may seem cumbersome, it is interim during COVID-19, and it is designed to help us respond to the volume of emails we receive every day. Since we are receiving a high volume of applications, please be patient if a dog/cat is no longer available.

Thank you for your understanding.
