Finding the Perfect Match

Matching pets with people is important. We want to set everyone up for success so that finding your furry family member is a positive experience. So we ask questions. We want to understand your lifestyle, home environment, activity level, pet experience, and few other things to make sure our dogs and cats are a fit for you, and you are a fit for them.

Adoption Process

Ready to Adopt?

So, you’re interested in adopting one of our amazing dogs or cats? Perfect! All of the dogs and cats available for adoption, meaning we are still accepting applications, are listed on our website. We evaluate applications to determine who might be the best fit; therefore, it is not a first-come-first-served process. Following are same basic requirements to be eligible to adopt.

Applicants must:

  • be 21+ years old (you will be asked to show a driver’s license or a state-issued ID)
  • live within a 50-mile radius of our shelter at 22415 Groesbeck Hwy, Warren 48089
  • provide proof of home ownership (i.e. tax bill, deed, or mortgage payment – you can black out the account #, etc.) or animal clause/agreement of your rental agreement.

Our adoption process typically takes less than a week. Please keep this in mind if you have plans to go out of town. We don’t hold our pets until after you return, and we highly advise against going out of town for the first 3-4 months after adopting.

Application

Once you submit your application, it will automatically be sent to the Adoption Counselor assigned to that dog or cat. You will receive a formal response either requesting to review your application over the phone, or letting you know that we ended up selecting a different applicant for that dog or cat. If it’s the latter, it could take up to a couple of weeks to receive the final disposition. Thanks for being patient with us. We are working as fast as we can!

Speak with an Adoption Counselor

An Adoption Counselor will contact you directly to review your application, answer additional questions, and discuss dog/s or cat/s of interest.  We may also recommend other about dog/s or cat/s that we think might be a match.

Meet Dogs and Cats

Meet one or more of our fabulous furry dogs or cats to identify a match for you to adopt! Your Adoption Counselor will schedule an appointment for you to visit our facility for the introductions. If you are meeting a dog, all members living in the household, including current dogs, must attend this appointment. If you are meeting a cat, only the humans living in the home must be a part of the introductions – not the dogs or other cats!

Veterinarian Check

We will contact your veterinarian to ensure that your present, and even past, pets have been provided with proper care. We make sure your pet/s’ core vaccines are current, heartworm test and prevention are current (for dogs, and for cats depending on their access to outside of your home), and if they are spayed/neutered.

Home Visit

When one of our trained volunteers conducts a home check in your home, our goal is to ensure that the environment is safe and secure to successfully welcome your new dog. Home visits for cats are done virtually.  We will identify areas that pose a potential risk, such as escape exits in the yard, hazardous materials, and provide tips to the entire household on the role/s everyone can play in setting the dog or cat up for success.  Once the home check has been successfully completed, there is one last step in the process.

Finalize the Adoption

It’s time to take your new furry family member home! Adoptions are conducted at our facility. We provide our adopters with vaccine records, transition food, and a folder with a variety of helpful information and coupons. Your Adoption Counselor will schedule the adoption appointment.

Training

We are a firm believer that training develops a strong bond between you and your dog, and creates a platform of communication so your dog knows when he/she is pleasing you.  Most of our dogs are adoptable without a training requirement, but we will always encourage you to sign up for a class with a local positive reinforcement trainer. Please note that we do not condone any sort of training or tools (i.e.choke collars, pinch collars, and shock collars) that use force and punishment.

Ongoing Support

We may occasionally check-in with you to ensure the transition of the dog or cat into your home is going smoothly and you have the support you need to make it a successful adoption. We have many trainers and resources to suggest that will help the transition process.

Adoption Fees

Why an adoption fee?

Rescuing animals isn’t cheap! Veterinary Bills- vaccines, illnesses and infection, surgeries. Food. Building utilities and maintenance. Employee wages. Yes, we are a non-profit charity but in every way imagineable, we are a business whose purpose is to save lives. Adoption fees are a source of income to help us run this business. ****Veterinarians recommend rechecking for FIV and FeLV 6 months after the initial test due to the long incubation period of these viruses.
